The building that Kitsons Restaurant occupies was formerly part of the Lion Hotel. After most of the Lion Hotel was demolished in the 1930's to accommodate new shops the remaining two sections of the former hotel became a pub, The Red Lion. The Pub continued to trade until its closure in 1987 along with another favourite in Abingdon the Queens.

After the closure of the Red Lion the upstairs part now occupied by Kitsons Restaurant was used mostly for storage by the various shops that occupied downstairs. Thankfully the original interior beams have survived and have been beautifully restored.
